This article applies to Arc for macOS
What is a Keychain Error?
Keychain errors occur while you're signing into an existing Arc account. The error will look something like: "We can't save the password into your keychain. Please make sure it's unlocked." (see image below).
This keychain error can occur because Arc cannot access a specific keychain, the "Local Items" or "iCloud" keychains, on your computer. Not being able to access the desired keychain may be due to security or antivirus software installed on your computer that has locked those keychains.
How to Resolve Keychain Errors
You can resolve Keychain errors by unlocking your keychain. To do this, follow these steps:
-
Open your Terminal, paste this in, and hit enter:
sudo security lock-keychain "$(security login-keychain | xargs)"
. See gif of this step below -
When prompted, type your device's login password. Terminal doesn't always show keystrokes while you're typing. You'll know you were successful if you see no errors here.
-
Open up the "Keychain Access App". You can find this by hitting the 🔎 in your Mac Menu Bar and typing "Keychain Access"
-
Verify that the "Login" and "Local Items" are locked ( the icon will look like a closed lock 🔒) in the left sidebar.
-
Right click the "login" keychain. Select the "Unlock keychain "login"..." option. Enter your device login password (see image below). Verify that the lock icon in the sidebar of Keychain Access is now in the "unlocked" state.
-
You'll then be prompted to enter the password for the "Local Items" keychain, which is going to likely be a previous device password. Change this to be the same as your current device password.
